Diese Schmalspurbahn ist seit 9. Juli 1887 in Betrieb, sie z\u00e4hlt zu den \u00e4ltesten dampfbetriebenen Bahnen Europas. Die H\u00f6chstgeschwindigkeit betr\u00e4gt 15 km\/h. Nach dem Tod von K\u00f6nig Ludwig II. im Jahr 1886 wurde die bisher f\u00fcr die \u00d6ffentlichkeit nicht zug\u00e4ngliche Herreninsel mit dem Prunkschloss zur allgemeinen Besichtigung freigegeben. Das Interesse war gro\u00df und es l\u00f6ste eine wahre Besucherwelle aus. Doch es bestand das Problem, wie man die Besuchermassen zur Herreninsel bringen sollte.
